Method

01

Moisten half the outer rim of a martini glass with water and dip it into the salt. Place the glass in the freezer to chill.

02

Pour the reposado tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, orange juice, and olive brine into a cocktail shaker.

03

Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 10 seconds until the outside of the shaker is frosted.

0mLook for: Shaker exterior appears frostedFeel: Shaker feels very cold to the touch
04

Strain the mixture into the chilled, salt-rimmed martini glass.

05

Spear two olives on a cocktail pick and place them in the drink. Serve immediately.

Chef's Notes

  • Using fresh-squeezed juices is critical for the balance of acidity and sweetness.
  • Reposado tequila provides a smoother, slightly oaky profile that pairs better with olive brine than blanco tequila.

Storage

Troubleshooting

Drink is excessively salty

Cause: Salt was applied to the inside of the rim and fell into the liquid

Fix: Cannot be fixed

Prevention: Only apply salt to the exterior edge of the glass rim

Drink is diluted or watery

Cause: Shaken for too long or ice was too small

Fix: Cannot be fixed

Prevention: Use large ice cubes and shake for exactly 10 seconds

Cultural Context

The Mexican Martini, also known as a Margarita Martini, is a modern hybrid cocktail that blends the spirit of a classic Margarita with the sophistication of a Martini. It emerged as a popular drink in bars and restaurants, particularly in the United States, seeking to offer a tequila-based alternative to the traditional gin or vodka Martini, often with a distinctly savory twist.
