Method
Place 30g sugar and 30ml hot water into the cocktail shaker. Shake until the sugar is fully dissolved.
Add 30ml tamarind concentrate and 45ml lemon juice to the shaker. Shake vigorously to combine.
Fill four highball glasses with ice. Divide the tamarind mixture evenly among the glasses.
Top each glass with 60ml of soda water. Add two dashes of Angostura bitters to each drink.
Hold an orange zest strip over a flame for 10 seconds until it begins to color. Twist the strip over the drink to release oils, then place it in the glass.
Chef's Notes
- Ensure your tamarind concentrate is fresh and potent; older concentrates can lose their vibrant flavor. Taste and adjust sweetness if necessary, as tamarind can vary in tartness.
- When making the simple syrup, use hot water to fully dissolve the sugar. This ensures a smooth, integrated sweetness rather than grainy sugar at the bottom of the drink.
- For the best aromatic oils from the orange zest, use a vegetable peeler to get a wide strip of peel, avoiding the bitter white pith. Express the oils by twisting the peel sharply over the flame and then directly over the drink.
- The flamed orange peel adds a subtle, smoky aroma and a hint of caramelized sweetness. Practice this technique in a safe area away from flammable materials.

Troubleshooting
Sugar crystals remain at the bottom
Cause: Water was not hot enough or shaking was insufficient
Fix: Stir with a long spoon until dissolved before adding ice
Prevention: Use near-boiling water and shake before adding cold tamarind or lemon juice
Cultural Context
The Louisville Sling is a modern, non-alcoholic twist on classic cocktail traditions, particularly those that feature sour and aromatic elements. While not tied to a specific historical event or region, it embodies the growing trend of sophisticated mocktails that offer complex flavors and elevated presentation, making them suitable for any occasion.
